Metrô Rio is a mass-transit underground railway network that serves the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The network covers a total of 41 kilometres, serving 35 stations, across two lines. Line 1 covers 16 kilometres and Line 2 serves a 30.2 kilometre stretch, with a total of 30 stations. Metrô Rio has the second highest passenger volume of the metro systems in Brazil, after the São Paulo Metro.

Representatives of China’s leading rolling stock manufacturer CRRC met with Secretary of Cities, Lucio Gomes, and the preseident of the Cearense Society of Metropolitan Transport (Metrofor), Eduardo Hotz, to discuss the development of a new construction plant in the state of Ceará. The meeting focused on the economy of the state and the possibility of creating an EPZ (Export Processing Zone) to help attract and enable foreign investment in the region.

São Paulo’s silver-15 Line, Brazil’s first monorail, began limited operations this week, connecting Ipiranga and Cidade Tiradentes stations. At present, trains will only use two of the eighteen eventual stations, running a 2.9km stretech between Oratory and Villa Prudente. When Line 15 is complete and fully operational, 500,000 people are expected to travel on the full 26.6km route daily.

SP Metro Rescind Line 4 Construction Contract Amidst Continued Delays

São Paulo Governor Geraldo Alckmin has confirmed that contracts with the Isolux Corsan-Corviam consortium for the construction of new stations as part of the Line 4 extension of the Metro have been rescinded. Five years after the projected completion date, the works remain a long way from completion and are already well over budget. A new contract tender to complete the works will open in the coming days, according to the city government.

Line 4 of the MetroRio network will be operational by 2016 according to Governor Pezão and Secretary for Transport Carlos Roberto Osório, who confirmed that drilling machine’s are currently in operation between what will become the Jardim de Alah and Antero de Quental stations in Leblon. Twelve of the sixteen kilometers needed for the project have been excavated.

MetrôRio have successfully deployed Cisco Wi-Fi at the Flamengo, Largo do Machado and Catete stations, with plans to expand the service across the entire network by the end of the year. The system operates via Cisco Access Points and Cisco Prime architecture, and is used by both passengers and onsite commercial establishments inside the stations.
