Construction has begun on Santo Domingo’s first cable car line which will have five stations and run over five kilometres, and, according to government estimates, will benefit around 287,000 residents. In an official government statement officials affirmed that the ‘Teleférico Santo Domingo’ will “to defend and dignify the lives of thousands of people living in La Barquita and its surroundings.”

The Office for the Reorganization of Transport (Opret) this week announced that Line 2 construction work is nearing completion and network testing is expected to begin within the next 6 months. Opret deputy director Leonel Carrasco said that a tunnel, which has been constructed as part of the works, has been a particularly complicated undertaking, has now been fully constructed.

With 230,000 passengers per day, the Santo Domingo Metro now generates $US27.8 million per year, which is enough to ensure the network operates at a profit without any government subsidy. According to the Transport Reorgnization Office (Opret), the system is now one of only two fully self-sustaining railway transit systems in the world reliant on absolutely no state subsidy.

The 3km Line 2 tunnel for the Santo Domingo Metro was completed on wednesday, with officials confirming that the project continues on track for an early 2016 completion. Peña noted that project contractors have contributed between $20 million and $25 million towards the project, which will have to be repaid.

The Office for the Reorganization of Transport Operations (OPRET) explained that Santo Domingo Metro generated 400 thousand million pesos in 2014, serving 60 million users, with the costs supported by a 700 million government subsidy. Engineer Leonel Carrasco, official spokesman for the organisation, explained that there was a 9.4% increase in ridership when compared to 2013, which he attributes to increased user confidence in the transport system.
